The 1 ounce Krugerrand gold coin from South Africa is the most well-known and also the most popular gold coin in the world. The classic of investment coins. Since 1967, this gold coin has been issued by the Rand Refinery in Germiston, near Johannesburg. Due to the addition of copper, the Krugerrand gets its reddish color and thus increases scratch resistance. The front side of all Krugerrand coins features the South African president Paul Kruger (1882-1902), who is also depicted as the motif on the coin. On the reverse side, a springbok, the national animal of the Republic of South Africa, adorns it. Formally, the Krugerrand is an official means of payment in South Africa according to the South African Reserve Bank regulations.
