The crown had a peculiarity: Although it was considered a silver currency, gold was used as the unit of account. With the currency reform in 1892, the crown replaced the gulden as the official currency. It was introduced as both a 10-crown piece and a 20-crown piece.

Later, another coin was introduced: In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Franz Joseph's reign in 1908, a 100-crown gold coin was minted. All three crowns bear the portrait of the emperor, who during his long reign was confronted with the diverse interests of the various nationalities in the multinational state structure of Austria-Hungary. The 10-crown pieces were officially minted until 1906 and bear the date 1912 as a restrike.
