The crown had a special feature: Although it was held in silver currency, gold served as the reference unit. With the currency reform in 1892, the crown replaced the gulden, both as a 10-crown piece and a 20-crown piece.
Later, another specimen was introduced: On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Franz Joseph's reign in 1908, a 100-crown gold coin was minted. All three crowns bear the portrait of the emperor, who throughout his reign was confronted with the various interests of the nationalities of the multi-ethnic state of Austria-Hungary. Crowns were officially minted until 1915 and also bear this date in the reproduction.
