FOUR GULDEN (4 Florin Gold Austria)

The gulden is a coin that originally comes from Germany. There, gold gulden were minted from the 14th century onwards, and later also silver gulden. In Austria, the gulden was the official currency in the 19th century.

France, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland founded the Latin Union in 1865. In these countries, all gulden were to be equal in value, size, and weight. Although Austria did not join the Latin Union, it still minted a 4-gulden coin and also an 8-gulden coin. Both pieces had the same specifications as those of the Union. The coins were minted with the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph until 1892. Then the crown replaced the gulden as currency.
