Since the 13th century, ducats have existed in Europe, with gold ducats from Venice being of high importance in the late 13th century. However, most of the gold ducats still in circulation today come from Austria, where ducats were minted from the 16th to the 20th century. Until 1858, ducats were an official currency in Austria, as the gold ducats from Austria were approved as trade gold coins, allowing them to be minted until 1915. All modern reissues display the year 1915, as well as Emperor Franz Joseph and the double-headed eagle. For this reason, the 4 ducat gold coin from Austria is an investment coin that has a relatively low collector's value.
