Gold American Buffalo 1 Ounce

The design of the American Buffalo gold coin is based on the design of a 5-cent coin by sculptor James E. Fraser from 1913. The buffalo on the reverse side is the specimen Black Diamond, which was an attraction in the New York Central Park Zoo around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Unfortunately, it is not known from the records which Native American chief served as the model for the depiction on the front, and this has not been definitively clarified to this day.
