Gold Austria Babenberger 1000 ATS

On the occasion of the memorial year "1000 Years of the Establishment of the Babenbergers in Austria," the government of Austria decided to issue a gold commemorative coin on October 22, 1976. The first gold schilling coin has a face value of 1000 schillings corresponding to the anniversary number. Its gross weight is 13.5 g, resulting in a fine weight of 12.15 g with 900 gold. Mintage: 1.8 million. Since December 31, 2001 (introduction of the Euro), it is out of circulation and is traded as a pure investment coin. The obverse features the equestrian image of Duke Friedrich II the Warlike. He died childless in 1246 in the Battle of the Leitha, and with his death, the rule of the Babenbergers ended. The reverse of the investment coin bears the Austrian coat of arms. A crowned eagle with sickle and hammer and torn chains in its claws. The sickle represents the peasantry, the hammer represents the working class, and the torn chains symbolize Austria's independence. The schilling was introduced as currency in Austria in 1925, replacing the crown.
