Silver Niob Coin 150 Years Semmering Railway

The Semmering Railway is the first railway in the world to cross a mountain range. 150 years after its construction, it is still in operation on a nearly unchanged route. The silver niobium coin with the green core celebrates the marvel of technology, which has also been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The railway was built according to the plans of the construction genius Carl Ritter von Ghega between 1848 and 1854. Around 20,000 men worked on it. Over a distance of 41 kilometers, the Semmering Railway overcomes a height difference of 460 meters and passes through 14 tunnels, 16 viaducts, and over 100 stone bridges.

The green color of the niobium core symbolizes the landscape through which the route runs. The core features a historical and a modern locomotive. They are meant to represent the technical development of locomotive construction. On the other side, a steam locomotive is depicted in perspective as it crosses the so-called Kalte Rinne on a viaduct.

With a maximum mintage of 50,000 pieces, this coin was issued in the quality 'Handgehoben'. 150 years of Semmering Railway consists of 900 silver in the outer ring and pure niobium inside. Each coin is packaged in both a capsule and a box. A special certificate guarantees its authenticity.
