Philosophers still puzzle over the mystery of time today. Augustine sums up the fundamental problem: “What, then, is ‘time’? If no one asks me, I know; if I want to explain it to someone who asks, I do not know.” German philosopher Rüdiger Safranski finds a way to describe it: “Time is the stuff we are made of.” Even if we can measure time precisely, we cannot fully understand it.
The coin
The face of the coin shows a clock face with Roman numerals in the two-color niobium section. The hour and minute hands are set at 10:10. Further inside, also following the circle of the clock, are the symbols of the twelve signs of the zodiac.
In the lower right quarter of the silver ring, you can see gears that simplify the mechanical movement. A minute is visualized on the outer edge. – On the other side, simplified gear wheels dominate the niobium. A sun has been inserted into one on the left edge of the pill; an hourglass on the right edge. A time spiral runs from the upper part of the pill into the silver-colored ring. In this spiral, time continues infinitely in the form of an analog time display. The moon is depicted on the left edge of the coin. The right half of the coin is dedicated to time zones. For Vienna, the time was taken from the obverse. For Tokyo and New York, the corresponding time difference was calculated and placed in the silver ring with the name of the city.
